Maureen Hurll (Carramore)
It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Maureen Hurll. Maureen will be remembered mainly for her work with The Irish Setter Rescue Group founded in 1968, Funeral arrangements are as follows: Having attended the lovely celebration Funeral Service of Maureen's life on 22nd November with my wife Pamela. It was most disappointing that so few Irish Setter folk took the time to say farewell to someone who spent a lifetime dedicated to our Breed. Less than twenty people attended. Maureen was indeed a very special lady, a former Irish Setter Breeders Club Hon. Secretary, Life Member, & Championship Judge, having awarded 19 sets of Challenge Certificates including Crufts in her lifetime. She also founded the Irish Setter Rescue Group. A group that has rehomed 100’s of Irish Setters over the years. She will be dearly missed by many Irish Setter enthusiasts. Willy passed away last night Another dear Irish Setter friend has passed away this week, after a long illness. As well as her love for her Irish Setters she held great intesest in all wildlife. We send our condolances to daughter Tracey & husband Scott & Family. Val was a great character, full of fun and adventure, she will be sorely missed by all who knew her. It is with much sadness we report the passing of June Walsh. The world of Irish Setters has now lost another long term successful breeder and exhibitor. We send our deepest sympathy to her family & close friends at this sad time. See below an excellent tribute by Kay Donnelly. The call I had dreaded came early this morning from Sally Foster to tell me of the passing of my good friend June Walsh (Millcroft Irish Setters). June has been unwell for the last number of years and fought her illness and lack of mobility with great dignity and despite her frustrations she would chirpily declare “I just have to get on with it!” During our last telephone conversation shortly before her final hospitalisation she revealed how she was totally bedbound but “luckily” had her tv, phone and kindle to whittle away the hours. Playing the self pity card was simply not her style. June’s dogs were her pride and joy and over the years she bred many wonderful dogs. I first got to know June when her handsome boy Chance (Janter Moon Magician at Millcroft) filled my eye from ringside. Some time later, having seen Abbi, Sh Ch Millcroft Ballad of the Moon, as a raw youngster I approached June for a puppy whenever she planned breeding from her. There followed a long four year wait but during that time we cemented a lasting friendship. When the litter arrived I went for my pick and the wonderful Jodi entered my life and what a journey we shared, supported by June every step of the way. After I chose her June confided to me that if I had not selected Jodi she would have kept her. When I replied that as breeder she surely had the right to keep whatever she wanted her reply has lived with me always - “I’d given you my word and I would never go back on that”. And that was June to a tee! We shared every step of Jodi’s success and I always loved those post show calls! Ironically her favourite photo of Jodi was of her being hugged by my son Mike the day I brought her home. She said that knowing she was going to receive that kind of love meant more than anything! The successful show career that followed was secondary to that!! I was blessed to be present at LKA when her beloved Abbi gained her first CC in style with Best of Breed. What a day! June was so so proud but, as was her way, it was a reserved pride. She presented both myself and Julie with a lovely framed Irish Setter print of setters having fun that she bought in celebration of the occasion. It hangs in my kitchen and always makes me think of June and that joyous day. The following Crufts was certainly a Millcroft one! Not alone did Abbi win the Bitch CC but her daughter Pearl, Jodi’s sister, won Best Puppy In Breed. June watched from ringside silently bursting with pride and had to be reluctantly coaxed into some photos. Not one for fanfares she then rapidly disappeared to her bench to sit with “her girl” and savour a quite moment and tend to Abbi. Gaining her title was so well deserved for both Abbi and June. Though Abbi was her special girl June held all of her dogs dear to her heart. Her last Irish Setter, her constant companion and beloved Piper, passed away recently. June always said she was simply never going to die while he was alive, and she didn’t. Just before Covid struck ,at Midlands Irish Championship Show, David Pike, as bitch judge on the day, made it a Millcroft double awarding Jodi and Scarlett with CC and Res CC. Later Jodi and her brother Chase completed another Millcroft double with Best Veteran and Res Best Veteran In Show. How proud she was and what wonderful recognition for June’s lifetime in Irish Setters. I will forever be grateful to June, not just for my beautiful Millcroft girl but also her friendship. She was smart, wise beyond words, loyal, straight talking, sensitive and witty. I will miss her hugely but will forever cherish all of the good memories. I know she will be missed by her sister Jill and her many close friends. I have to commend Sally Foster for her steadfast loyalty to June. June lived for her visits and between them they put the world of dogs to right! Sally you really were a true blue friend to her and I know she really appreciated all that you did for her. Sleep softly dear June as you are reunited with your beloved John and all of the beautiful Millcrofts that waited for you at Rainbow’s Bridge. I will never forget you. organising an online Breed Appreciation Day (BAD) on Sunday 13th June 2021 at 2 pm. The speaker is Mrs Patricia Butler-Holley who is no stranger to the club and has a vast experience in our breed. As this is an online event all interested parties are welcome to join in for the information session which should last around an hour to hour and a half. To register your interest and get an application form for one or both parts of the BAD please send an email to Edenaveys1@outlook.com. The Kennel Club Crufts Committee has reviewed the qualification entry for Crufts 2022 and has agreed that 1st, 2nd and 3rd in Novice and Graduate classes should be added to qualification status for championship show wins where breeds have separate classification, including from shows that have already taken place. The qualification period for Crufts 2022 is from 25 January 2021 until 24 January 2022 inclusive; however, those that were placed first at Crufts 2020 will also qualify for Crufts 2022. For the full qualification criteria, If it has won any of the following prizes at General and Group Championship Shows, scheduled between 25 January 2021 and 24 January 2022 in non-CC classes for breeds normally allocated Challenge Certificates (provided there are more than three breed classes or more than five classes for Stud Book Band E breeds). i. Thank You, Gill (Dale) It is with deep regret that The Kennel Club has decided to cancel Crufts 2021, which was due to take place from 15 – 18 July. This is owing to ongoing uncertainty due to the Covid-19 pandemic and in consideration for the health and safety of all its volunteers, judges, exhibitors, sponsors, trade stand holders, visitors and staff. For many months, ongoing discussions have been taking place with the NEC and other parties in trying to find a way forward in making it possible to run this year’s show in a Covid-secure way. The opening up of events in general, especially those that take place inside is still unclear and The Kennel Club’s priority must be the health and safety of all those mentioned above. The Kennel Club also recognised that clarity was required now to mitigate any commitments that all our potential participants may undertake. Over the past few weeks, The Kennel Club commissioned a survey asking for opinions from those in the canine world on returning to events and although it has been very reassuring to see that 60% would like to get back to their dog activities as soon as it is safe to do so, it was noted that 63% did not feel comfortable or were unsure about attending an inside event in the near future. Tom Mather, Crufts Chairman, said: “We are very disappointed that we have had to cancel Crufts for the first time since 1954, in what would have been its 130th anniversary year, and it is a decision we have not taken lightly. “We have tried desperately hard to make this year’s show happen, including the decision we took last November to postpone the event to July. However, of course this was before we were hit by the devastating second wave of the pandemic. “When this decision was taken, we were optimistic that the situation would be such that the show could be held. However we appreciated that there was a possibility that holding the show in the summer under certain restrictions could also, in some respects, do the show a disservice. We were disappointed that, even though we carried over the qualification from 2020, we would still be limited on our entry numbers and wouldn’t be able to welcome as many dogs back as we would have liked. “It would also be regrettable that there was a strong possibility that many of the popular events and features of the show, such as obedience, the Good Citizen Dog Scheme, Young Kennel Club ring and Discover Dogs, would not have been able to be included under the restrictions which could be imposed. Further discussions will be taking place regarding the impact of the cancellation of Crufts over the next couple of months, such as the qualification criteria for Crufts 2022 for all disciplines, including the Young Kennel Club. The Kennel Club appreciates that judges from this year’s show will be very disappointed and the committee will be looking at the options to invite them to judge at a future Crufts and will be making further announcements in due course. The Kennel Club would like to take this opportunity to thank the shows who were willing to partner with Crufts due to the clash of dates when Crufts was moved to July and also all the other shows and canine events that had been affected by the date change. We would also like to thank the NEC, its sponsors and Channel 4, for the understanding that everyone has shown. It is very much appreciated. Meanwhile, The Kennel Club will continue to provide any assistance it can with shows and events this year and to try and ensure canine activities get up and running in the safest possible way. In view of the prospect of ongoing restrictions on social gatherings for some months to come, The Kennel Club has considered how best to help registered societies to proceed with their routine AGM business, especially as many were unable to hold their 2020 AGM. The rules and established practice of registered societies in most cases require that AGMs are physical meetings and give no provision for postal/online voting. In order to circumvent the need to hold physical AGMs, The Kennel Club Board has enacted KC Regulation C5.e., which is a new provision, so that irrespective of what a club’s constitution may provide, the Board may direct that registered societies may relax / suspend constitutional provisions. In this way, societies may legitimately process routine business by adopting interim arrangements such as postal / online voting or remote meetings, as appropriate. Kennel Club Regulation C5.e. has been introduced to provide as follows: C5.e. The Kennel Club Board may direct that provisions within a registered society constitution may be relaxed or suspended for a fixed period, to allow society business to proceed when circumstances beyond the control of the society so require. The Kennel Club Board has agreed that this new Regulation is to be invoked with effect from 5 February 2021 for a 6-month period relating to the processing of routine business usually dealt with at AGMs. A guidance note for registered societies is available on the following link: thekennelclub.org.uk/agms This outlines how a registered society may process routine AGM business in a procedurally compliant way, notwithstanding the content of its constitution. The Kennel Club is confident that this route will assist the many societies that have been unable to hold AGMs since March 2020. I am sure that many of the older breeders and judges will know Maureen, 
and for over 50 years had been involved in the re-homing of Irish Setters. Maureen was also a Breeder,
Exhibitor & Championship Show Judge and a former Hon Secretary of the Irish Setter Breeders Club.

Maureen Oliver (Sandene)
she passed away peacefully in Doncaster Royal Infirmary on January 28th 2021.
My first Irish Setter Kelly (Sandean Talitha) came from Maureen. I used to see her husband John walking
two of her setters, and think there was no finer sight, I was smitten and thanks to her I have never been
without a red ever since. She was always there for me with helpful advice if I needed it with my dogs.
I am sure she will be remembered with great respect and affection in the
show world as she judged not only setters but other breeds too.

Pauline Kenny (Burrenmist)
Pauline passed away on the 30th January 2021 after a short illness aged 80 years.
Beloved wife to David, recently deceased, with whom she is now reunited.
Devoted mother to Jacqueline, Caroline and Suzanne. Pauline and David
made their home in Leicester after leaving Ireland in the late 1950's.
Pauline worked for many happy years before retirement at the County Hall.
She was immensely successful in showing her Irish Setter dogs around the UK.
Bob Heron (Caskeys)
It is with immense sadness we report the passing of Bob last night,
22nd January. After all the health problems he had beaten in the past,
Bob got Covid whilst in hospital after a fall and very quickly deteriorated.
Fiona was able to visit him in hospital before he died,
when he was still conscious.
We send our love & deepest sympathy to Fiona, Neil & family, at this sad time.
We have so many treasured memories of happy times, spent at Bob,
Christine & Fiona's home, over the years. They were the perfect hosts
and always made us feel so welcome.

Travel arrangements between Great Britain and Northern Ireland
Those travelling from Great Britain with dogs need to follow new rules in order to travel to the EU and Northern Ireland. It is important to note that British pet passports are not valid for travel to these destinations and a new animal health certificate is instead required for each journey. For dog owners in Northern Ireland new rules apply to travel from Great Britain to Northern Ireland, while rules regarding travel between Northern Ireland and the EU remained unchanged and existing pet passports will need to be updated prior to travel.
Furthermore, it should be noted that dogs now need a rabies vaccination, tapeworm treatment and the correct documentation to travel with their owners to Northern Ireland from mainland Britain, for the first ever time. This is disappointing and will make travelling with dogs to Northern Ireland – or returning to Northern Ireland after coming to Great Britain – much more difficult for pet owners and those involved in canine activities. We are also concerned over the impact of these new rules on the ability for Northern Ireland residents to responsibly source puppies, as the new travel rules will make it illegal to transport a puppy from Great Britain to Northern Ireland until they’re at least 15 weeks old.
This is despite Government stating that there would be ‘no significant changes to travel between Great Britain and Northern Ireland’ up until a few weeks ago. We will certainly be in contact with Government over the coming weeks to see what can be done to make the impact of these changes as minimal as possible for dog owners travelling throughout these islands.
Dog owners are advised to familiarise themselves with the new rules long before travel and there is further advice and clarification on The Kennel Club website at thekennelclub.org.uk/brexit.
Yvonne Horrocks (Carek)

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Yvonne Horrocks.
Yvonne had been resident in a nursing home for a while, where she
passed away peacefully on Sunday 13th December 2020. She was 96 years old.
Many may not know that Derek (Yvonne’s son) died in January 2020.
Yvonne was very well known for her Irish & Gordon Setters as a very successful breeder,
exhibitor and judge at Championship level.
Our lasting memory was Yvonne awarding us a CC at Crufts 1988 with
Eng
& Ir Ch Reddins Fintan of Riqitta (see photo below).
We send our deepest sympathy to her family and friends at this sad time.

Yvonne's funeral will be held on Wednesday, 6 January, at 3:15pm at Chilterns Crematorium,
Amersham (Milton Chapel). Family flowers only but donations may be made to the Dogs Trust.
