Review of 2018

There were 39 sets of CC’s available to Irish Setters during 2018.  These 39 CC’s were shared between 19 dogs (compared to 17 in 2017, 12 in 2016 and 20 in 2015,) and 22 bitches (compared to 18 in 2017, 22 in 2016 and 26 in 2015), giving the breed  41 separate CC winners in total (compared to 35 in 2017, 34 in 2016 and 46 in 2015).

The exhibit winning the most CC’s during the year was Blake Crocker’s Sh Ch Coppers War of Roses, who won 9 CC’s.  Arthur was followed by his daughter, also owned by Blake, Sh Ch Riverbrue Gloriana, who won 7 CC’s during 2018.  They were followed by Sh Ch & Ir Sh Ch Gwendariff Coco Nut Cream, who is handled by her breeder Diane Stewart Ritchie and owned by Debs Armitage, who won 4 CC’s during the year.

There then followed six exhibits who each won 4 CC’s during the year, these being Alec Stewart and Danielle Ritchie-Smith’s Sh Ch & Ir Sh Ch Gwendariff Whippersnapper JW, Christine McLarnon’s Sh Ch & Ir Sh Ch Gwendariff Nuts About U Glenavna JW, Jackie Willis’ Sh Ch Gwendariff Thyme Bomb at Jacwilins JW, Jim and Sue Cuddy’s Sh Ch Suteresett Rebel Rouser by Balbriggan JW, Marie Wilson’s Sh Ch Copper’s Snowqueen and Richard Bott, Anthony Allen and Angela Morgan’s Sh Ch Quensha Tumble and Twirl JW.

2018 was another year where our breed enjoyed success in the group ring.  Sh Ch & Ir Sh Ch Gwendariff Whippersnapper JW won the Gundog Group and Reserve Best in Show at Belfast, and Group 3 at Gundog Breeds Association of Scotland.  Sh Ch Coppers War of Roses was Best in Show at National Gundog, Reserve Best in Show at Setter and Pointer and enjoyed a number of other group placings, including 4th in the group at Crufts.  Sh Ch Riverbrue Gloriana was Reserve Best in Show at Gundog Society of Wales and won Group 2 at Three Counties.  Sh Ch Gwendariff Thyme Bomb at Jacwilins JW won Group 2 at Birmingham National, and Sh Ch Thendara Pot Noodle JW won Group 2 at LKA.

During 2018 there were three exhibits who won all of their first 3 CC’s during the year, one dog (Sh Ch Suteresett Rebel Rouser by Balbriggan JW) and two bitches (Sh Ch’s Copper’s Snowqueen and Quensha Tumble and Twirl JW).

In addition to these three, eleven other new show champions were crowned during the year – making a total of 14 new show champions compared to just 5 in 2017, 7 in 2016 and 13 in 2015.  Of these new show champions, Sh Ch Riverbrue Gloriana won a total of 7 CC’s during the year (her first CC having been gained in November 2017) and Sh Ch Gwendariff Thyme Bomb at Jacwilins JW won 3 CC’s (having won his first during 2017).

Five exhibits won 2 CC’s during 2018 to gain their crown – the dogs Gordon and Debbie Rowbottom’s Sh Ch Lanstara Spring Moon, Ken and Pat Stockton’s Riverbrue Alchemist Amidst Kespas JW, Aylien Oli’s Chase Cinammon’s and the bitches Hannah Bouttell, Bob Bouttell and James Burbridge’s Ixia Ever Hopeful and Susan Begg, Dee Milligan-Bott and Jeremy Bott’s Thendara Chasing Boys to Sumaric.

There were four exhibits who each won 1 CC during 2018 to gain their crown – two dogs; Pam Mitchell’s Amblin Sweet William and Jacque Bayne and Kirsty Miller’s Caermgen’s Element of Truth at Feorlig and two bitches; Marita Bott’s Bardonhill Guilty Pleasure and Brenda Berry and Lyn Morris’ Brinara Vanity Fair JW.

During the year there were a total of thirteen existing show champions who added to their tally of CC’s. Some have already been mentioned above (Coppers War of Roses won 8, Gwendariff Whippersnapper won 4, Gwendariff Coco Nut Cream won 4 and Gwendariff Nuts About U Glenavna who won 3), Dee Milligan-Bott and Jeremy Bott’s Sh Ch Thendara Pot Noodle JW won 2 CC’s, Sandra, Jenna and Nicola Sturrocks Sh Ch Forfarian Hey Sexy Lady JW won 2 CC’s and Richard Bott, Anthony Allen and Angela Morgan’s Sh Ch Bardonhill Please Don’t Tease Quensha also won 2 CC’s.

That leaves six Sh Ch’s who each won 1 further CC during 2018 – Dee Milligan-Bott and Jeremy Bott’s Sh Ch Thendara Commitment JW, Paddy Catling’s Sh Ch Shandwick Love In A Mist for Teleri JW, Jane and Roger Mugford’s Ch Lynwood Happy As A Lark JW, Jean and Jon Lippett’s Sh Ch Neathamill Isabella at Clonageera, Laura Kolbach’s Ch Coppers Wine N’Roses and Mona Hunter and Will Brown’s Sh Ch/Int Sh Ch Fairhaven Louise Mountbatten at Braidmount.

There were five existing CC winners adding a second CC to their tally during the year. In dogs these were Dave and Karen Hemming’s Orlanset The Rocker JW and Ruth Longbottom and Diane Stewart-Ritchie’s Gwendariff Unknown Soldier JW.  In bitches, these were Sandra Nevitt’s Aoibheanne’s Stay With Me, Jane and Roger Mugford’s Sangarah Skyline Over Lynwood JW and my own Bardonhill Afternoon D’Lite at Fernstart.

That leaves nine exhibits winning their first CC in 2018 – five dogs and four bitches. This compares to fourteen new CC winners (seven dogs and seven bitches) in 2017, and seven in 2016 (two dogs and five bitches).  In dogs these were Ger Ch Gwendariff Nutty Professor, Margretwoods Gobstopper JW, Pawsword Pied Piper, Gwendariff Ucantmissme and Riverbrue Altissimo at Aoibheanne JW, and in bitches Corranroo Rainbow Kisses, Staratlanta Fire Queen JW, Riverbrue Ophelia at Glennara JW and Gwendariff Nutmeg.

In last year’s report I commented on the continued success of some of our current top exhibits over recent years – in particular Sh Ch & Ir Sh Ch Gwendariff Whippersnapper JW, Sh Ch Coppers War of Roses, Sh Ch Thendara Pot Noodle JW and Sh Ch Bardonhill Please Don’t Tease Quensha JW.  In that report I suggested that all had the potential to win more CC’s and this proved to be the case with all adding to their tally during 2018.  As it currently stands Whippersnapper has 31 CC’s, Pot Noodle has 28, War of Roses has 33 and Please Don’t Tease has 20 CC’s – again all continue to be in top form and could well add to their tally in 2019.

There were six combinations of CC winning parents and offspring during 2018. Four of these were sires winning CC’s in the same year as their offspring: Sh Ch Coppers War of Roses and his sons Riverbrue Alchemist Amidst Kespas and Riverbrue Altissimo at Aoibheanne and daughters Riverbrue Gloriana and Riverbrue Ophelia at Glennara;  Sh Ch & Ir Sh Ch Gwendariff Whippersnapper and his son Gwendariff Thyme Bomb at Jacwilins and daughter Aoibheanne’s Stay With Me;  Sh Ch Thendara Pot Noodle and his daughter Staratlanta Fire Queen and Sh Ch Gwendariff Thyme Bomb at Jacwilins and his son Gwendariff Ucantmissme.  Two bitches won CC’s in the same year as their offspring – Ch Copper’s Wine N’Roses and her sons Coppers War of Roses and Pawsword Pied Piper and Sh Ch Bardonhill Please Don’t Tease Quensha and her daughter Quensha Tumble and Twirl.

The above highlights another unusual occurrence, with three generations of Gwendariff’ s winning CC’s in the same year, Sh Ch & Ir Sh Ch Gwendariff Whippersnapper and his son Sh Ch Gwendariff Thyme Bomb at Jacwilins and grandson (via Thyme Bomb) Gwendariff Ucantmiss Me.  There was a further set of three generations of CC winners in 2018 in Laura Kolbach’s Ch Copper’s Wine N’Roses and her son Sh Ch Coppers War of Roses and his offspring Sh Ch Riverbrue Gloriana, Sh Ch Riverbrue Alchemist Amidst Kespas JW, Riverbrue Ophelia at Glennara and Riverbrue Altissimo at Aoibheanne JW.

The year produced two sets of CC winning litter mates – with each litter producing four CC winners in the year!  Gwendariff Nuts About U Glenavna, Gwendariff Coco Nut Cream, Gwendariff Nutty Professor and Gwendariff Nutmeg are all from the same litter by Sh Ch & Ir Sh Ch Northamber Just Cause for Glenavna JW ex Ir Sh Ch Gwendariff Walnut Whip; and Riverbrue Alchemist Amidst Kespas, Riverbrue Altissimo at Aoibheanne, Riverbrue Gloriana and Riverbrue Ophelia at Glennara are all from the same litter by Sh Ch Copper’s War of Roses ex Sh Ch Neathamill Nerissa.

Particular mention must also be made of Sue Edwards Gwendariff Ucantmiss Me who won his CC at the age of just 6 months and one week of age – becoming the youngest ever CC winner in the breed.

Successful sires during the year were Sh Ch & Ir Sh Ch Northamber Just Cause at Glenavna JW, who sired five CC winners (winning a total of 10 CC’s between them) – Sh Ch & Ir Sh Ch Gwendariff Coco Nut Cream, Sh Ch & Ir Sh Ch Gwendariff Nuts About U Glenavna JW, Ger Ch Gwendariff Nutty Professor, Gwendariff Nutmeg and Margretwoods Gobstopper.   Sh Ch Coppers Champagne on Ice at Aoibheanne JW also sired five CC winners (these winning 8 CC’s between them) – Sh Ch Forfarian Hey Sexy Lady JW, Sh Ch Amblin’s Sweet William, Sh Ch Chase Cinammon’s, Sh Ch Neathamill Isabella at Clonageera and Sh Ch Ixia Ever Hopeful.

Sh Ch Coppers War of Roses sired four CC winners (who won a total of 11 CC’s), these being Sh Ch Riverbrue Gloriana, Sh Ch Riverbrue Alchemist Amidst Kespas JW, Riverbrue Ophelia at Glennara and Riverbrue Altissimo at Aoibheanne JW. Sh Ch/Int Ch Sumaric Shadow of Mr Jingles also sired four CC winners during 2018 (who won 8 CC’s between them) – Sh Ch Thendara Pot Noodle JW, Sh Ch Thendara Chasing Boys to Sumaric, Sh Ch Suteresett Rebel Rouser by Balbriggan JW and Sh Ch Brinara Vanity Fair.

Sh Ch/Int Sh Ch Coppers Magiska Under sired three CC winners (winning 12 CC’s between them) - Sh Ch Coppers War of Roses, Sh Ch & Ir Sh Ch Gwendariff Whippersnapper JW and Gwendariff Unknown Soldier JW.

In terms of successful dams, there were two bitches who have each produced four CC winners during 2018 – Sh Ch Neathamill Nerissa, the dam of Sh Ch Riverbrue Gloriana, Sh Ch Riverbrue Alchemist Amidst Kespas JW, Riverbrue Ophelia at Glennara and Riverbrue Altissimo at Aoibheanne JW (this litter winning 11 CC’s in 2018) and Ir Sh Ch Gwendariff Walnut Whip, the dam of Sh Ch & Ir Sh Ch Gwendariff Coco Nut Cream, Sh Ch & Ir Sh Ch Gwendariff Nuts About U Glenavna JW, Ger Ch Gwendariff Nutty Professor and Gwendariff Nutmeg (winning 9 CC’s between them in 2018). Ch Copper’s Wine N’Roses produced two CC winners, one from each of her two litters - Coppers War of Roses and Pawsword Pied Piper, and Bardonhill Days Are Diamond JW was also the dam of two CC winners (each by a different sire) in Sh Ch Bardonhill Please Don’t Tease Quensha JW and Bardonhill Afternoon D’Lite at Fernstart.

Kennel wise, eight Gwendariff’s won CC’s during the year. Of these there were six dogs:  Whippersnapper, Nuts About U Glenavna, Thyme Bomb at Jacwilins, Unknown Soldier, Nutty Professor and Ucantmissme, and two bitches; Coco Nut Cream and Nutmeg.  These exhibits won a total of 18 CC’s between them.

There were four CC winning exhibits carrying the Riverbrue affix during 2018, winning a total of 11 CC’s between them – Gloriana, Alchemist Amidst Kespas, Ophelia and Altissimo.  There were three CC winning Coppers, winning a total of 12 CC’s between them – War of Roses, Wine N’Roses and Snowqueen..  There were also three CC winning Thendara’s – Pot Noddle, Commitment and Chasing Boys to Sumaric, winning a total of 5 CC’s, and three CC winning Bardonhill girls Please Don’t Tease Quensha, Guilty Pleasure and Afternoon D’Lite at Fernstart.  There were also two kennels with two CC winning bitches – the Lynwoods (Happy As A Lark and Sangarah Skyline) and the Quensha’s (Bardonhill Please Don’t Tease and Tumble and Twirl) and two CC winners with the Aoibheanne affix – Stay With Me and Riverbrue Altissimo. Finally there were two CC winners owned by Jacque Bayne, Caemgen’s Element of Truth at Feorlig and Corranroo Rainbow Kisses.

Many congratulations to all those listed above and good luck to everyone in 2019.

Annual Review of 2017

This excellent 2017 Review was written by Becky Box a breeder, exhibitor and Hon Secretary of the ISAE

Review of 2017 Irish Setter Results

There were 39 sets of CC’s available to Irish Setters during 2017.  These 39 CC’s were shared between 17 dogs (compared to 12 in 2016, 20 in 2015, and 15 in 2014) and 18 bitches (compared to 22 in 2016, 26 in 2015 and 23 in 2014), giving the breed  35 separate CC winners in total (compared to 34 in 2016, 46 in 2015 and 38 in 2014).

The exhibit winning the most CC’s during the year was Debs Armitage’s Sh Ch Gwendariff Coco Nut Cream, handled by Diane Stewart-Ritchie, who won 9 CC’s during the year.  She was followed by last years’ top CC winning exhibit, Blake Crocker and Amelia Siddle’s Sh Ch Coppers War of Roses, who won 7 CC’s during 2017.  Sh Ch Bardonhill Please Don’t Tease Quensha JW (owned by Richard Bott, Anthony Allen, and Angela Morgan) won six CC’s during the year.  Meanwhile Sh Ch’s Thendara Pot Noodle JW (owned by Jeremy Bott and Dee Milligan-Bott), Gwendariff Nuts About U Glenavna JW (owned by Christine McLarnon) and Sh Ch Forfarian Hey Sexy Lady JW (owned by Sandra, Nicola and Jenna Sturrock) each won five CC’s.  Two further dogs, Sh Ch & Ir Sh Ch Gwendariff Whippersnapper JW (owned by Alec Stewart and Danielle Ritchie-Smith) and Sh Ch Gwendariff D’Ya Know My Name By Bardonhill JW (owned by Marita Bott) each won 4 CC’s during the year.

I think it is worth pausing at this point to recognise the continued success of some of our current top exhibits – Sh Ch & Ir Sh Ch Gwendariff Whippersnapper JW now has a total of 28 CC’s, Sh Ch Thendara Pot Noodle’s tally is now 26 CC’s and Sh Ch Coppers War of Roses now has 24 CC’s. It is unusual I think to have three such big winning males competing at the same time.  In bitches, Sh Ch Bardonhill Please Don’t Tease Quensha JW has now reached 18 CC’s, also a significant tally for a bitch – and of course all have the potential to win more.

It is also worth reflecting on the number of different best of breed winners who have gone on to achieve group success – with 7 different dogs achieving success at this level in 2017.  Sh Ch & Ir Sh Ch Gwendariff Whippersnapper JW won Group 1 at Belfast and Group 2 at Driffield.  Sh Ch Thendara Pot Noodle JW won Group 1 at Blackpool and Group 3 at South Wales.  Sh Ch Copper’s War of Roses won Group 1 and Reserve Best in Show at East of England and Group 3 at WELKS.  Sh Ch Thendara Commitment JW won Group 2 and SKC (May).  Sh Ch Gwendariff D’Ya Know My Name By Bardonhill JW won Group 2 at Darlington and Sh Ch & Ir Sh Ch Gwendariff Nuts About U Glenavna JW won Group 3 at Southern Counties.  And for the girls, Sh Ch Gwendariff Coco Nut Cream won Group 2 at LKA.

Unusually there was just one exhibit, Sh Ch Gwendariff D’Ya Know My Name by Bardonhill, who both won all of his first three CC’s during the year.  In fact it took him just 3 weeks to gain his title – winning his first CC at SKC (August), second at City of Birmingham and third at Darlington – as well as picking up the RCC at Richmond – which is quite an impressive way to do it!

During 2017 there were just 5 new show champions crowned, compared to 7 in 2016, 13 in 2015 and 7 in 2014.  Of these, there were two dogs and three bitches, and three of the five came from the Gwendariff kennel. The dogs were Sh Ch & Ir Sh Ch Gwendariff Nuts About U Glenavna and Sh Ch Gwendariff D’Ya Know My Name By Bardonhill.

The bitches were Sh Ch’s Gwendariff Coco Nut Cream, Tania Gardner’s Thendara Jocasta JW and Eva Ciechonska’s Aoibheanne’s Say No More JW.

Six exhibits, 3 dogs and 3 bitches, each won 2 CC’s during 2017.  Of these, two of the dogs – Sh Ch’s Thendara Commitment JW (owned by Jeremy Bott and Dee Milligan-Bott) and Forfarian I’m Sexy An I Know It JW (owned by Sandra, Nicola and Jenna Sturrock) were both existing Sh Ch’s adding to their tally.  Two bitches, Sh Ch’s Thendara Jocasta JW and Aoibheanne’s Say No More JW, each won a CC to gain their crown and went on to win a fourth CC during the year.  The remaining two exhibits, Pam Mitchell’s Amblin’s Sweet William and Sandy Waterton’s Sandstream Welcome Breeze JW, each won their first two CC’s in the year.

During the year six existing show champions added a further CC to their tally. These were one dog Richard Bott, Anthony Allen and Angela Morgan’s Sh Ch Ember Red Hot Chilipepper Quensha (winning from veteran) and five bitches Sh Ch’s Shandwick Love In A Mist at Teleri JW (owned by Paddy Catling), Sh Ch/Int Ch Fairhaven Louise Mountbatten at Braidmount (owned by Mona Hunter and Will Brown), Sh Ch Gwendariff Soda Pop to Wynjill (owned by Jill Holley), Sh Ch Shenanagin She’s The One for Karidell JW (owned by Brian and Norma Limpus) and Ch Copper’s Wine N’Roses (owned by Laura Kolbach).

Again unusually, there was just two existing CC winner’s adding a second CC to their tally during the year – Julie Gilbert’s Joanma’s Perfect Lullaby and Brenda Berry and Lynn Morris’s Brinara Vanity Fair JW.

That leaves thirteen exhibits winning their first CC in 2017 – seven dogs and six bitches (compared to just seven first time CC winners, two dogs and five bitches, in 2016).  In dogs these were Gwendariff Thyme Bomb at Jacwilins JW, Lanstara Spring Moon, NL Ch Chase Cinammon’s, Gwendariff Unknown Soldier JW, Delsanto Snow Storm, Jsy Ch Tiroen Too Hot To Handle JW and Riverbrue Alchemist Amidst Kespas JW.  In bitches the new CC winners were Brabrook Boomshakalaka, Jubilana Eternal Flame for Cwsscwn, Sangaragh Skyline Over Lynwood JW, Ir Sh Ch Millcroft Whispering Moon, Aoibheanne’s Stay With Me and Riverbrue Gloriana.

Finally, in terms of wins, special mention must also go to Ch Copper’s Wine N’Roses, on winning best veteran in show at Gundog Breeds Association of Scotland.

There were three combinations of CC winning parents and offspring during 2017.  Sh Ch Coppers War of Roses and his son and daughter Riverbrue Alchemist Amidst Kespas and Riverbrue Gloriana; Sh Ch & Ir Sh Ch Gwendariff Whippersnapper and his daughters Aoibheanne’s Say No More and Aoibheanne’s Stay With Me plus his son Gwendariff Thyme Bomb at Jacwilins; and Sh Ch Thendara Pot Noodle and his daughter Joanmas ’ Perfect Lullaby.

The year produced four sets of CC winning litter mates – Gwendariff Nuts About U Glenavna and Gwendariff Coco Nut Cream (Sh Ch & Ir Sh Ch Northamber Just Cause for Glenavna JW ex Ir Sh Ch Gwendariff Walnut Whip); Forfarian Im Sexy An I Know It and Forfarian Hey Sexy Lady (Sh Ch Coppers Champagne on Ice at Aoibheanne JW ex Forfarian Caught You Lookin); Aoibheanne’s Say No More and Aoibheanne’s Stay With Me (Sh Ch & Ir Sh Ch Gwendariff Whippersnapper JW ex Sh Ch  Copper’s Champagne Bubble at Aoibheanne) and Riverbrue Alchemist Amidst Kespas and Riverbrue Gloriana (Sh Ch Copper’s War of Roses ex Sh Ch Neathamill Nerissa).

Successful sires during the year were Sh Ch Coppers Champagne on Ice at Aoibheanne JW sired five CC winners – Sh Ch Forfarian Hey Sexy Lady JW, Sh Ch Forfarian I’m Sexy An I Know It JW, Amblin’s Sweet William, Ir Sh Ch Millcroft Whispering Moon and NL Ch Chase Cinammon’s.  Sh Ch/Int Sh Ch Coppers Magiska Under, sired four CC winners - Sh Ch Coppers War of Roses, Sh Ch & Ir Sh Ch Gwendariff Whippersnapper JW and Gwendariff Unknown Soldier JW.  Sh Ch/Int Sh Ch Sumaric Shadow of Mr Jingles continues to make his mark through his offspring Sh Ch Thendara Pot Noodle JW, Sh Ch Thendara Jocasa JW and Brinara Vanity Fair JW.  Finally Sh Ch & Ir Sh Ch Northamber Just Cause at Glenava JW sired two CC winners – Sh Ch Gwendariff Coco Nut Cream and Sh Ch & Ir Sh Ch Gwendariff Nuts About U Glenavna JW.

In terms of successful dams, this year is again unusual in that only those producing CC winning litter mates (rather than CC winners from different litters) have produced more than one CC winner in the year. These are Ir Sh Ch Gwendariff Walnut Whip, dam of Gwendariff Coco Nut Cream and Gwendariff Nuts About U Glenavna; Forfarian Caught You Lookin, dam of Forfarian Hey Sexy Lady and Forfarian I’m Sexy An I Know It; Sh Ch Coppers Champagne Bubble at Aoibheanne, dam of Aoibheanne’s Say No More and Aoibheanne’s Stay With Me and Sh Ch Neathamill Nerissa, dam of Riverbrue Alchemist Amidst Kespas and Riverbrue Gloriana.

Kennel wise, seven Gwendariff’s won CC’s during the year – Whippersnapper, Nuts About U Glenavna, Soda Pop to Wynjill, Thyme Bomb at Jacwilins, Unknown Soldier, D’Ya Know My Name By Bardonhill and Coco Nut Cream – winning a total of 25 CC’s between them.  There were 3 CC winning Thendara’s – Pot Noodle, Commitment and Jocasta and there were also three CC’s winners bred/owned by the Riverbrue kennel – Sh Ch Copper’s War of Roses, Riverbrue Alchemist Amidst Kespas and Riverbrue Gloriana.  There were then the remaining sets of litter mates winning CC’s from their respective kennels Forfarian Hey Sexy Lady and Forfarian I’m Sexy An I Know It, and Aoibheanne’s Say No More and Aoibheanne’s Stay With Me.  Finally there were two CC winners for Bardonhill in 2017 – Please Don ’t Tease Quensha and Gwendariff D’Ya Know My Name.

Many congratulations to all those listed above and good luck to everyone in 2018.
